Ke Akua Aina Food (life style farm) The North Shore of Oahu is known to many as paradise. Unique and one of its kind in that it is littered with some of the worlds most epic surf in a small 7 mile stretch. Ideal weather, perfect waves, fertile soil, and a world-renowned attraction to surfers, artist, freethinkers, naturalist, and the likes. At times it can be international with all the visitors from far lands. I often Question the sanity in the way Hawaii deals with food. Hawaii ships in close to 90% of its produce, which is ludicrous considering that Hawaii is one of the most conducive places in the world to be self-sufficient and sustainable Before western culture infiltrated the Hawaiian Islands it truly was paradise. It was much different than the industrial individualistic society of today. Instead of hustling to make ends meet, Hawaiians lived in villages that were community based. Meaning everyone worked together and had a specific purpose that brought prosperity not to the individual but the community. In a village it is hard to become complacent because everyone is important and needed to make life happen. Aina food such as taro, breadfruit, fish, limu, guava, liliquoi and other exotic fruits, herbs, and vegetables were the diet. Today the Hawaiian diet is recognized as loco moco (heart attack on a plate) and spam musubi. I see that it is only appropriate and relevant to replant the seeds of the past by living in harmony with the aina as we nurture and utilize …
